For years, women dealing with moderate to heavy urinary leaks had only one answer: stacking up protection. A pad, then a second one. A night-time nappy just in case. Always more of something, never anything actually better. That has changed. A new generation of absorbent underwear can now hold a full day, or a full night, in a single piece. And more and more of my patients are specifically asking me for this level of protection. I will explain why, and I will share the solution I trust most at the end of this article.
If you are dealing with moderate to heavy leaks, read this before you buy another pack of Always Discreet, TENA, or Boots own-brand pads.

One of the biggest frustrations women have with disposable pads is that they saturate quickly. Many women end up layering multiple pads at once because they are afraid of leaks, dampness, or embarrassing accidents throughout the day. Orykas ultra-absorbent knickers can absorb up to 300 ml, equivalent to several regular pads combined, while still looking discreet under clothing. The multilayer absorbent core quickly locks liquid inside the fabric to help women feel dry, protected, and confident for hours.

This is often the first thing women notice after switching. Traditional disposable protection can feel thick, noisy, visible under clothes, and emotionally difficult to wear. Modern absorbent underwear is designed to look and feel like real feminine underwear. No bulky nappy effect. No plastic feeling. No loud crinkling noise while walking. Many women say they finally feel normal again instead of feeling like they are wearing a medical product.

Disposable pads and nappies often trap moisture and odour inside synthetic materials for hours. This is one of the reasons many women constantly feel uncomfortable or self-conscious. Orykas uses breathable bamboo fabric, which is naturally antibacterial, hypoallergenic, and much more breathable than traditional disposable protection. The absorbent layers help pull moisture away from the skin quickly, helping reduce dampness and odour throughout the day.

Many women wearing disposable protection experience heat, irritation, rubbing, itching, or discomfort after several hours.Ultra-absorbent underwear was designed to be worn like regular underwear all day long. The bamboo fabric is soft against the skin, flexible, and breathable, making it far more comfortable than thick disposable protection. Many women eventually forget they are even wearing absorbent underwear.

Between pads, liners, disposable protection, and adult nappies, many women spend hundreds of pounds every year managing bladder leaks. Over time, that can easily represent more than £1,000 spent on disposable products. Because absorbent underwear is washable and reusable for years, many women save a significant amount of money long term. But for most users, the biggest change is emotional. Women often explain that they stop constantly worrying about leaks, odours, toilets, clothing choices, or embarrassment in public. They travel more comfortably, wear the clothes they want again, and regain a sense of normality, confidence, and femininity.
The shift to well-engineered heavy absorption
The clinical consensus has been moving in one direction for some time now: away from stacks of disposable products and towards modern high-capacity absorbent underwear. The reasoning is straightforward. One garment, properly absorbent, keeps the pelvic floor engaged, allows the skin to breathe, and, perhaps most importantly, preserves the patient's sense of normality, which has measurable effects on recovery, mental health, and long-term adherence.
Among the products currently on the market, the one I have seen produce the most consistent results in my own practice is a brand called Orykas.
What makes them clinically interesting is the choice of bamboo fibre rather than synthetic blends. Bamboo is naturally antibacterial and hypoallergenic, which significantly reduces the dermatitis and recurrent infection cases I used to see constantly with disposable users. The absorbent core is properly engineered, up to 300 ml, the equivalent of 8 regular pads, and the cut is genuinely indistinguishable from regular underwear, which matters more than people realise. Patients who do not feel like patients tend to stay active, and active patients have better outcomes.
I will add one practical observation: their stock is genuinely difficult to get hold of right now. Bamboo production does not scale the way synthetic fabric does, and the brand frequently runs out of common sizes for weeks at a time. If you decide to try them, I would suggest doing so promptly rather than waiting.
